What a fabulous 2-week Christmas vacation in Cambodia! Our little girls impressed both of us with their travelling skills - flexibility and sense of adventure! In fact both girls even ate a cricket.
Here's our itinerary which worked out perfectly - reserving hotels on booking.com and then figuring out the transportation in between and daily activities once we got there. For the most part we had our hotel book a private car to the next city as it wasn't much more than 4 tickets on a luxury bus - and far more convenient.
*Dec 19th: Flew from FUK via Shanghai to Phnom Phen
*Dec 20th: Great breakfast at roof top of hotel, 1st tuk tuk to Royal Palace, and drove to beach
*Dec 21-24: Otres Beach with day trip/overnight to Koh Rong Island
*Dec 25-28: Siem Reap - fabulous temples, Angkor Watt, Ta Prohn, Beng Melay, Banteay Srea, Bayon....and the hunt for the pink tuk tuk, night markets and pub street
*Dec 29-31: Battambang - the bamboo train, tuk tuk rides through countryside/villages, temples, bat caves, and the Phare school/circus
*Jan 1-2: Phnom Phen - shopping at Central market and Russian market
Most days we started early - did a few sites/activities - came back to the hotel for a late breakfast and pool - and then went back out in the late afternoon for more sightseeing/night markets. This allowed us to miss the heat of the day and give us a break from absorbing too many new facts.
Coming from pristinely clean Japan a first we were a little surprised by the trash and felt that Cambodia was a mix between India and Thailand, closer to the former, but very quickly we could look past it. The people are lovely and friendly and really enjoyed seeing our girls. The village life and countryside was really neat to view. Morgan is leaning to compare and contrast in school so we had a lot of discussion on similarities with Japan and Cambodia and differences.
What a great trip!
